AKA: The Domino Club.
When traveling to St. Croix, I asked my friend who previously lived there what was a must do. Her first response was that we must go to Norma’s!
Apparently Norma is a legend on the Island of St. Croix, and she runs a bar called the Domino Club where you can see pigs drink beer.
I know, right? How could we miss that?
So when we got off our cruise ship, we rented a car and headed straight for The Domino Club. After driving through some winding roads that appeared to be through a deserted rain forest, we arrived at The Domino Club.
To say this bar is a dive is putting it nicely. It’s a dive! There’s one bar and it had one lady working behind it (who wasn’t Norma). There were a couple of taxis of tourists that had pulled up, and a lot of people at the bar drinking. We wandered around a bit, and saw a small shrine to a pig named Buster, who was either the first pig or else a much loved pig.
Eventually, I decided to go ask the bartender, who was extremely busy and seemed to be the only person working, about where we could see the pigs. Before I got there, though, she announced to everyone that it was $1 per person to see the pigs. There were two pigs who were out drinking today. If you wanted to give them a beer, it was $2 to buy the beer and to keep in mind that the pigs don’t share beer. Also, you can take all the photos you want, but you have to pay to take video.
So I walked up, paid $4 for my family to see the pigs, and bought two beers. (Don’t worry, they were O’Douls.)
Eventually the bartender finished getting everyone’s money and handing out beers, and we walked up to a locked door and let everyone in. The stalls were very high, so I couldn’t see over right away and I wondered how I was going to see the pigs when a pig jumped up on the stall wall.
This was a massive pig. And it was super happy to see us! The bartender explained how you do it. You shake up your can, then you hold it up and drop it in the pig’s mouth, no need to open it.
The pig would take the beer, crunch the can, and drink the beer. It was so funny.
I know someone is going to come here and complain that this isn’t right to feed pigs beer. First, these are 500 pound pigs drinking O’Douls – they certainly aren’t getting drunk! Second, you can tell by the way the bartender was talking that these are much, much loved pigs and well cared for. As an animal lover, I can tell you that I wasn’t at all unhappy with what was going on here.
We fed our beers to the pigs, and took lots of photos. It was very fun. The kids enjoyed it, the adults all enjoyed it. Upon exiting the pig area, one of the adults from the tourist group said, “Best dollar I ever spent!”
We asked about how this came about, pigs drinking beer, and the bartender told us that a long time ago, a pig stole a beer from the table. And that’s how it all started.
Cost: While the bar did serve food and drinks, all we spent was $8 to buy entry to see the pigs and two beers.
Note: This is a bar, and my kids happened to be the only kids there at the time. Nobody seemed to have a problem with it, and we had fun, but something to keep in mind if taking your kids to bars makes you uncomfortable.
